MUSIC

EARLY INFLUENCES
My love for music has grown through the years. Ashamed to admit I was a huge fan of the so-called "Songhits Mania" in the early 90's. What it means is I sing through the lyrics of overrated songs and put them on my brother's component with huge bass and amplifier to the tune of Stevie B, Scotman's World and Air Supply. Who would've liked the Magic Carpet Ride back then?

PRE-PIRACY
Then there was the era where mainstream hip-hop, rap and hard-core love songs where popularised through series of CD compilations that we never thought would become a form of piracy in late-90's. I was even presenting this to my speech class as lucrative business of compiling music through a comprehensive database of music. Well, no one reacted and the piracy laws have not yet come into force. I got 4.0 in my speech anyhow. Napster and Audio Galaxy where such a hit back then.

CASSETTE TAPES
Back when cassette tapes were as cheap as Php100 (approx. A$3) I would buy at least two tapes per week from my school allowance. I would rewind the songs perfectly on the tracks I would want to play. I had dreams of becoming radio DJ and play Pop songs every 4 in the afternoon.

COMPACT DISC
I remember my first discman does not have a brand, which I bought straight from my savings. My first CD was Tina Arena's Into Deep, which debut the massive hit "Burn". I discovered her first on a compilation called 'Now That's What I Call Music' when she sang "Chains".

1ST PROMOTIONAL TOUR
The first concert I went is just a promotional tour of a well-known Irish group called "The Corrs". Back then they only had one hit called "Only When I Sleep" but I already memorised all the tracks of "Talk on Corners", which I totally got obsessed with their song "Don't Say You Love Me".

LATE 90's - EARLY 2000's
Huge evolution of music when I was in High School. I was influenced partly by my brother who used to play Rage Against the Machine and Silverchair. I became an avid fan of Rock and Alternative.

The fusion between R&B and Alternative mixed when I went to college. I reckon R&B balances the Rock/Alternative musical influences I had in High School. Back then Mariah Carey's rap mixes where a total hit for me. It all started when I heard "Breakdown" and soaring the charts was the big hit from BNT called "Crossroads". Back to Mariah, it was the first real concert I had when she went to Manila back in 2003. Glad I was working then, I was able to afford the Silver Ticket priced at Php 2,500 (approx. A$70).

DIGITAL ERA IN MUSIC
At present time, I don't buy my music in a record store anymore. I download straight to iTunes to get a digital copy of the album. The first digital album I got is a local Perth band called "Birds of Tokyo".

CONCERTS WATCHED IN SYDNEY
When I started living in Sydney, it broadened my Music and got influenced with Brit Rock and House. Although I would still have the undying love for R&B and Alternative. I had more disposable income in Australia, which meant I watched heaps of concerts including Snow Patrol, Cold Play, Maroon 5, John Mayer, Foo Fighters, Kings of Leon, Green Day. This year Australia was fortunate to witness Mariah Carey and my concert buddy (Emie) decided that will get the Fantasy package which costs A$400+. It was really crazy but it doesn't happen too often I guess. I highly anticipate watching Garbage soon (early March 2013) cos I missed their concert in Singapore in Sep 2012.
